Major Upset in the Swanson Household

Kristin (Hilger) Iavarone, me and Reid (the winner ;) )

Belle giving us a kiss post race!!
Who ever said that you can do a 5K for fun? YEA RIGHT! No such thing. Whether you are in shape or not, a 5K HURTS! Like really, really bad ;-) Being the super competitive family that we are with each other, we decided we would join lots of great friends and have “fun” at a local 5K!
One of my really good friends, Kristin, decided to drive up from Santa Cruz to join us for some painful “fun.” We had a good time warming up together and chattin’ away as usual. Although with the temps in the high 30s, it was hard to talk and warm-up without freezing our butts off! After a good warm-up we chatted with more friends and had a blast getting ready to start. This was Kristin, Reid, and my 7th day back at training after a nice several weeks off. So, we really just wanted to have a good time out there. BUT, we all kind of forgot that a 5K is TOUGH to have fun at, it’s over pretty darn quick and you have to hurt to have somewhat of a chance to not get passed by some xcountry high schoolers ;-) HAHA!
We all went out pretty close together, all 5 of us who are good friends. I felt great, really great! We went through mile 1 in 6.29, except for Reid who decided he would pick up the pace already. He went through a bit ahead of us. I was having such a great time, smiling, thinking how easy this felt. But soon enough I felt the lactic acid build up so quick in my quads. UH OH! Reid was getting away, so was Kristin, so were 2 of my other friends. Oops, did I go out too quick? Hmm, YES is the answer!! Mile 2 was not so good, to put it mildly. But the last mile felt good again, so I gave it all I had on my rusty legs, and pullled off a decent 6 min/mile. Not too bad, but remember this was for ‘fun!’

Good place to start from, but a bit annoyed that Reid beat me ;-) HAHAHAHAHA, a first in a 5K in a long time. Good job to him for sure, and to Kristin and all of our friends that raced!! SUPER DUPER FUN!!

Good for you!! And, brrr…it was cold!

At least Reid didn’t “let” you win – that would’ve been a hollow victory at best.

Besides, we all know that Belle is the true speedster of the family ;-)

Fun is right! Glad you had fun! 5ks hurt no matter WHAT!

Oh my goodness, that is funny and not so nice at the same time. It’ll make you stronger and more hungry the next time you guys decide to “have a fun run”.
Be well.

Yup Greg, she is the speedster of the family. She’s out run as many times ;-)

Kate Weaver said:

Yay! Good times! You know what happens Reid beats you? You run harder next time…look out Reid! HA!

When I was little, my dad and I always joked about the title “Fun run”. I would always shake my head and say, “What the heck is so fun about it?”.
Maybe if Belle runs with you it’s fun?

I’ve yet to do a 5K that didn’t hurt bad. (That’s why I’ve only done two of them :-)

Congrats on getting out there!!

I hate 5K’s. I’d rather suffer for 13.1 miles than just 3.1. You’ll beat him next time. He’s just lucky you’re in the off season :-)

Laura said:

I’m with Mira I’d rather do 13.1 miles anyday! Non-runners always think I’m crazy that I hate 5ks so much! Glad you had some good family ‘fun’ out there.

Sounds like a good time and that your muscles are doing a lot better than the last time I saw you? If so, YAY! I’ve got a 6km xc race this weekend (national club champs), and after 2 weeks of sloth proceded by an IM, I’m terrified of letting down my teammates!

Sounds like a ‘Fun’ family affair. I always get stomped by my hubby in pure running races, but add the swim and bike, and well…then it gets really fun :-)

Congrats on pushing the pain threshold this time of year!

You are so cute. I’m sorry I couldn’t come out for the fun! To be honest, I was being too lazy to drive my butt out there early when it was SOOOO COLD!!!

We’ll meet soon, E, I PROMISE!

I’m so glad you had such a great coaching clinic on Sunday – def missed having you on my ride, but glad it was so informative!! :)

Hugs,
