Eileen Swanson's Tales

It’s Official, I gave notice…..

>>July 28th, 2008

Here is the view from our ride today ;-) I love CA!!

Here is the HUGE news!! It is now official, I quit my job at Oracle. I have 9 more days left and I will be a real “pro triathlete.” ;-) I am SUPER EXCITED! I have always wanted to give triathlon a real chance and since starting tri’s almost 9 years ago, I have always held a corporate job of some sort and always worked at least 50 hours a week. So, I will now be coaching and training full time. I will finally give myself a chance at training and recovering like my competitors. SO EXCITING!!

I will continue to coach several triathletes and marathon runners and hope to grow my coaching business. I absolutely love coaching!! It is so fun and rewarding to see your athletes grow and improve. It’s such an amazing feeling.

Thanks so much to my awesome husband who is always so supportive of whatever I choose to do. He is the most amazing person!! Thanks to Coach P for believing in me and thanks to all of my awesome teammates for encouraging me to move in the right direction!

No matter what happens, I will always know that at least I tried and I will have no regrets when I am older!!

Have an awesome day!

Enjoy your coaching, but don’t depend on it to make a living. Just enjoy training and helping those who come along for help. Also help your husband be successful and then you won’t need to think about working. I’m sorry to sound old-fashioned, but I guess I am.

I admire your courage! Congrats on taking a big step.

I’m struglling with this sort of debate for next year …I don’t feel I’m good enough to justify not working full time, but with more time for propper training AND recovery, who knows what could happen.

One LIFE right?? GO Eileen GO!

You are surrounded by such wonderful, strong people, and that will help bring you all the success you desire.

ENJOY :-)

Good luck with this Eileen. Yesterday I read a comment on Slowtwitch about career changes (yes usually not a good place to go for advice, I know!) and someone wrote something like, “I’ve never once regretted stepping out of my comfort zone to make a change.” I am hoping this works out perfectly for you!

E, You know (thru emails) that I am very excited for you and wish you the best. IT IS SUPER scarey, I know – I quit my job (ok, laid off with twins is more like it) and had to figure out what the heck to do in 1999. Well, I was NOT going to be a PRO triathlete, but coaching was always something I loved – and I took the leap – and I would NEVER change it…I think it is commendable that you are taking this leap – and you should train LIKE A PRO – full time with proper recovery – that is the way to do it. GOOD LUCK, Jen H.

Finally Eileen, I was about to come out there and quit your job for you when I heard you couldn’t race your last Ironman. You can work when you are 50, the time is now sister! Go for it, and no matter what you will be free of the thought “I wonder what would have happened if…..”

Now there is no IF, there is only possibility!

I think it will make a huge difference for the better. I am very inspired by your courage to do this and like everyone else said, now there will be no “what ifs”! Congrats and enjoy! :)

Thanks Eileen. I hope I can make it to KY to watch as well, but at the moment it is leaning towards the more unlikely side. I’ll do my best though. Congrats on your latest decision. I’m happy for you!!!

Eileen, was sort of wondering what was up when you “removed” your job from the sidebar of the blog! GREAT news! That is very exciting to be off on a new adventure and fully dedicate yourself to the tri experience of being a pro! Its also great that you have the “real world” exp. of being a full-timer and won’t take this for granted! Rock on!!

E,

I am so SO SO excited for you. There’s no time better than the present to start living your dreams. You deserve this and you are clearly so passionate about it – I have NO DOUBT you will both make this happen.

By enabling yourself to focus on the things that really matter, not only will you be plain happier, but you’ll be better at everything you’re choosing to do.

Congrats on finding the courage to take this HUGE step! I can’t wait to see how life unfolds for you!
